An innocent young girl in Yemen tragically died after having sexual relations with her 40-year-old husband after an arranged marriage. The child, 8, died from torn genitals and severe internal bleeding.
Yemen has been criticized for years for its ridiculous law allowing girls to be forced into arranged marriages. Back in 2009, lawmakers revoked a Yemeni law that set the minimum age of a bride at 17 as they deemed it an un-Islamic law. In 2010, a number of protest demonstrations by Yemen women after a 12-year-old died three days after her marriage from internal bleeding and a 13-year-old died during labor and no criminal charges were filed. Quite a few girls have been known to runaway ad go into hiding to avoid the arranged marriages.
Activists are hoping this tragic case will be used to help finally put an end to this crazy practice of marrying very young girls.
What are your thoughts on these Islamic laws practiced in the Middle East?
