Damon Wayans blasts the Emmys: ‘The celebration of whiteness’

Damon Wayans
is known for humor, but unlike his brothers Shawn and Marlon, the comic and actor usually adds a little bite to his jokes. Fans and followers were reminded of just how “biting” Wayans can be when the star hopped on Twitter and began offering commentary on the 2013 Emmy Awards.

Wayans made it clear from the outset that he was not happy about the lack of diversity at this year’s show.

And the BET awards are….? The Soul Train awards are….? The Ebony award show is…? This is just a silly statement full of ignorance. If they wanted to create a “white award show”, they would certainly be within their right since African Americans have many of them already. The main difference is if THEY did it, we would scream racism.

These award shows were made b/c people of color don’t get represented in white America award show. And notice these shows are music focus, as it will be hard to do straight tv and film b/c the climate is not there. And what sense would it made to create a white only award show when every award show is 98% white? Please make sense before commenting or STFU.

You’re all blinded. And black people ARE invited to the Emmy’s and they ALSO win. Don Cheadle, Kerry Washington, give me a break. And the climate for whites is present at BET Awards? We don’t create friendly environments for white folks at our award shows. It’s no less volatile than anything else. Every award show is not 98% white. That’s just an ignorant statement. The Emmy’s and Tony’s are because TV and stage is dominated by white casts that create some incredibly funny ass TV. And we’re not exactly rushing out to be in any plays anytime soon. And the movie award shows? Denzel, Will Smith, Cheadle (again), Samuel L Jackson, and the list goes on forever. It’s ridiculous to get caught up in screaming about inequality and at the same time have shows to separate yourself out from everyone else. Whites don’t avoid naming shows the “white awards” because they’re “scared”. It;s because it’s ignorant. We blacks want to be considered equal but create shows to tout how different we are. It’s fighting ignorance with ignorance and then wondering why everyone is still ignorant. I understand how touchy this subject is, but it will never be equal and it certainly won’t be if you just focus on the differences. Have pride in who you are and stop bitching and moaning all the time. Do your research or STFU yourself.

I could not have said it better. We can make up any show group or club and make it for us black people only and we have white people scared to say a word about it .hell the Caucasians are the only ones that can’t form a group for themselves. I am sick and tired of hearing the race card being played.

But the Emmy Awards are known as ‘Primetime Emmy Awards’ not as ‘WHITE Primetime Emmy Awards’. BET, ‘BLACK Entertainment Television’ is what it proclaims; therefore, the shows you’ve mentioned are not a masquerade.

@disqus_VJ5AGCv9vH:disqus but white people are invited to all of the Black shows and win too! I do not watch the Emmy’s because they are a trip!

@MakeSense:disqus I agree 1000% with you!!! I’m glad we have award shows to honor our own. This ward show was indeed for ‘EDOMITES’ (WHITE) ONLY and they made it perfectly clear.
