Jason Collins went from relative sports obscurity to international gay sports icon overnight when he came out and became the first openly gay active pro ball player in the U.S. Although many hoped that the NBA free agent would continue his pro ball career and become the first openly gay baller on the court, Collins was, sadly, never picked up by a team. But that doesn’t seem to have stopped the vet from pursuing sports in his own personal.
Collins may not play for a pro team again, but according to TMZ the celebrity athlete recently joined Hollywood’s Gay Varsity Kickball League is now playing for the risqué titled “Team Twerk.”
Collins recently suited up for his first game as the team’s 1st base player. Although Collins was rusty on the field, he eventually found his rhythm and helped his team score an 11-5 victory.
Despite the success, sources say that Collins isn’t committed to the team because he’s still trying to sign a deal with an NBA team. For now, Collins will just act as the go-to substitute when the team is lacking players.
We hope Collins’ NBA dreams will continue and that he does get signed with a team or parlay his new fame into a media career. If not, it’s good to know that he has another outlet for his sporty side.
However, he’s not the only athlete who faced difficulty staying in the game and the limelight after coming out. Check out some other LGBT celebs who struggled in the world of sports after coming out below. – nicholas robinson
