Dondria Nicole Fields, known to us as Dondria is an American R&B singer, currently signed to So So Def Recordings. Before getting signed she would actively post videos on YouTube of her singing chart topping hits, knowing how hard the music industry is she is offering advice to up and coming R&B singers. –Joi Pearson @joiapearson
What’s your creative process in the studio?
I like to keep the lights down low, candles lit. Lots of hot ginger tea with honey and lemon. I just close my eyes and it’s me and the mic or the music if I’m writing.
What you are doing currently working on?
I’m currently working on promoting my new EP, “Intermission.”
What do you love most about what you do?
I love that my job is also my getaway. I’m never stressed when I’m creating something beautiful and relatable to people.
How important is your self image in the industry?
It’s very important. In this day and age, sometimes talent comes second; so self image can make or break you. If you don’t know who you are or aren’t confident in who you are, these people can eat you alive.
How do you balance personal time, work & building your brand?
It’s very hard sometimes. You have to put in the work to see results so my relationships do suffer sometimes. I do play just as hard whenever i get the chance though because life is short. If I’m gone tomorrow, I won’t have any regrets.
What’s most gratifying about what you do?
The love and support I get from my “friend-fffans”. To see how excited they get when I come out on stage, come speak at their schools, or when I watch them sing all the words to my songs when I put the mic to the audience is the best feeling in the world.
What advice would you give to aspiring music artists?
I would tell them to utilize every single avenue. Get online, make accounts on all these social media sites, and spread, spread, spread. Don’t forget the more traditional routes either: open mic nights, karaoke, sending in demos, start out as a writer, etc…
What else do you have going on?
I’m also completing my sophomore album with Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox.
