Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, the highly anticipated biopic on the life of legendary South African leader Nelson Mandela is off to a fantastic start as it takes the number one spot on it’s opening weekend in South Africa.
The movie, which stars Idris Elba and Naomie Harris, opened there on Thursday and set new box office records as many people reportedly took a day off work to view it. Long Walk raked in almost $74,000 on it’s opening day, enough to outdo The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by a margin of almost 40 percent.
The film, which has already garnered Oscar buzz also recently had a star studded New York premiere co-hosted by fashion maven Anna Wintour and rocker/philanthropist Bono.
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom opens in the U.S. on Christmas day.
