On November 7th, 1991, Magic Johnson held a press conference in Los Angeles to reveal to the world that he had contracted HIV and was stepping away from the game of basketball. Johnson was not the first celebrity to announce being infected with HIV.
Johnson recalls it being the hardest thing he ever had to do. “I had been in the trenches with these guys. It was the hardest thing that I’d ever had to do because I’m walking away from my family — that I had been with for years.”
