Khumba is a South African 3-D computer-animated adventure comedy film about a half-striped zebra that is blamed for the lack of rain fall and banished from the herd. He then goes on a mission to earn his stripes.
Khumba (Jake T. Austin) is born into an isolated herd completely obsessed with stripes. Due to rumors of his being cursed, he is blamed for the drought that besets the Great Karoo, except for Tombi (AnnaSophia Robb) his lady zebra friend who has a big crush on him. When even his father (Laurence Fishburne), the leader of the herd, blames him for the lack of rain and the subsequent death of his mother (Anika Noni Rose), the outcast zebra leaves the confines of his home knowing that he cannot survive in the herd without all his stripes. He then embarks on a journey to find himself, and along the way comes into contact with a variety of characters that each teach him a valuable lesson. Through these interactions, Khumba begins to learn that diversity is essential for survival and that one’s difference can, in fact, be one’s strength.
Steve Buscemi, Loretta Devine, Phil Lamar, and the legendary Ben Vereen also lend voices to the film.
Khumba opens in limited theatrical release in the U.S. on Dec. 6.
