When fans think of La La Anthony, they inevitably think of her husband, Carmelo Anthony, and vice versa. Certainly, it’s a testament to not only the length of time they’ve been together, 10 years, but how strong there love is to us. In a way, it seems like they’ve always been together. However, before La La was living out her happily ever after with Anthony, she was living a nightmarish, abusive relationship with an ex-boyfriend. And in a recent interview with “Sway in the Morning,” La La opened up for the first time about her abusive past.
“Yes, dysfunctional abusive; verbally abusive. Not physically but I mean, it’s abuse in anyway. And very controlling. You know and it was my first love and I felt like he was controlling me because he loved me and that’s how he’s showing me that he loved me. And it was later on that I realized that was completely wrong and that’s a message I want to get out to young women out there. That’s not love,” said La La while chatting with Sway about her new book, The Love Playbook, which reveals the story of her abusive relationship.
La La explained to Sway that she wanted to talk about the abuse in the book because she wanted to assure that all of the wisdom she shares in the book was hard earned.
“I went through it and I like to speak from a place of experience …I’ve been through a lot that people don’t know about,” she said.
Sway asked La La to share just how bad the relationship got and she explains that her first love’s abuse had turned into physical threats toward the end of their relationship.
“Throwing plates of food at me. Breaking glasses. Always being really angry and upset. I was like, ‘This can’t be love.’ I would tell myself that and continue to stay. And I remember calling my dad like, ‘Dad, I need you to come and get me,’ ” she said, adding that it was a member of Sway’s radio team, an old friend, Rich Nice, who convinced the man to let her go with her father.
Well, it’s shocking to hear such a confession from La La, but we’re glad she was able to leave the abuse behind and now share her story with fans who need the motivation to leave behind their own abusive relationships.
