Labor Day
Stars: Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Gattlin Griffith, Clark Gregg
A single mom and her son offer a ride to a wounded escaped convict. OK, “offer” is not exactly how it goes down in this drama with a soft underbelly. The mom is depressed to the point of being completely disengaged with life. So when the mysterious criminal enters her world, it rocks her to her core.
While Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin give fine performances, the subject matter seems better suited for cable or a straight to DVD release. You want it to get better, but its entertainment value just doesn’t quite measure up to the price of a movie ticket or the cost of one’s time. –p.d. lee
