Once again, America’s mainstream media have given little coverage to an event that should have received national attention. Eight-year-old Relisha Rudd was a resident at a homeless shelter with her mother, Shamika Young. The little girl’s mother developed some type of personal relationship with the shelter’s janitor, Khalil Tatum, whom she trusted with her daughter. The janitor killed his wife and is now on the run with the little girl. Despite an Amber Alert being issued by the city of Washington, D.C., the states of Virginia and Maryland did not have the alert listed in their systems.
This is infuriating if you remember the kidnappings of white children, especially that of Elizabeth Smart. Every day on the news that little blond-haired girl’s picture was shown. News media seemed to make it a point to show her picture if not once a day, at least once a week. But once again we get an innocent young black girl taken by a suspected killer and the mainstream media barely covers the kidnapping.
Black people know more about a missing airplane from Malaysia than they do about a missing little black girl from Washington, D.C. Ask yourself; before you saw this article, had you heard about Relisha Rudd and if not, should you have heard?
