Karyn Washington of For Brown Girls commits suicide
A rising star in a positive self-love movement has died. Karyn Washington, 22, of Baltimore, Maryland was known for attempting to inspire African-American women to rescind colorism issues. In particular, she founded her For Brown Girls initiative and encouraged women to celebrate the beauty of their skin tone.
In 2013 when rapper A$AP Rocky admonished dark skinned black women for wearing red lipstick, it was Washington who started the #darkskinredlip project that garnered thousands of photos of black women donning the “forbidden” lip color.
Apparently suffering in silence, despite seemingly bubbly tweets and Instagram photos, Washington died earlier this week in an apparent suicide.
Washington has since been eulogized on Twitter by people who lauded her for striving to make a difference.
Karyn Washington. Gone too soon.
