Angelina Jolie has the lock on evil. Even her cheekbones seem carved from granite. This delicious retelling of the Sleeping Beauty tale has director Tim Burton’s signature touch; a dark, brooding atmosphere juxtaposed with his stars’ ephemeral beauty. Quirky horror stories are his forte and this one may be his best effort. Jolie has said that this is the type of movie she would watch with her children. That said, it’s not for the preschool set. –p.d. lee
