Fans of Aaliyah got some shocking news this week when it was revealed that Lifetime is planning to produce a TV biopic about the late great singer Aaliyah. And although fans seem to be thrilled about the long overdue biopic, many of them aren’t happy about the fact that Lifetime has cast 17-year-old Disney singer and actress Zendaya as Aaliyah. Now, the Haughton family is speaking out and defending Coleman from her detractors.
As previously reported by rolling out scribe Ruthie Hawkins, the Haughton family isn’t at all happy about the plans for the biopic and plan to fight Lifetime to kill the movie. However, the Haughtons hold no ill will toward Coleman and they recently chastised angry fans, via Aaliyah’s Twitter account, for bashing the young actress online.
Throughout the years since Aaliyah’s death in 2001, the Haughton family has been highly protective of Aaliyah’s image and although there have previously been several discussions about creating a biopic, the family has always decided not to go through with it.
This is certainly going to be a heated battle between Aaliyah’s family and Lifetime and we’re interested to hear what Coleman has to say about the drama, though she’s probably legally bound from saying too much. In any case, we hope Aaliyah eventually gets the biopic she deserves and that her family and friends are included in the making of the film. – nicholas robinson
