Last week, millions of fans tuned in to the season finale of “R&B Divas Atlanta” and watched as Monifah finally tied the knot with her longtime love, Terez, in Hawaii, garnering a massive amount of love and support from viewers. In a recent interview with TV One, Monifah opened up about her new marriage and shared some love advice with fans.
In the TV One blog post, Monifah explained to fans why she chose a black wedding dress instead of a traditional white gown.
“I’m not traditional AT ALL so you would never see me in a big white or off white dress. Black is one of my favorite colors so why not???? The dress is a combination of three dresses I liked. Black is chic, elegant and sexy. I sketch out my idea and with the help Gisele James Couturiere and it was just what I wanted!” said Monifah.
Monifah also explained that she and Terez planned the wedding together, deciding upon everything from the purple theme, to the dresses, to their choice to write their own vows.
“Terez and I both agreed that we should write our own vows. That was our idea together for sure. But what you don’t know is, I wrote my vows THAT MORNING!!! I wrote them and printed them up to look nice and that is exactly how I wanted it. I wanted to speak organically, let it flow and be in the moment!” Monifah said.
She added, “I communicate very well thru written word, so I was confident that I could convey my feelings about Terez. I prayed and asked to be able to say what was in my heart.”
And what was in her heart definitely came out during the beautiful wedding and now Monifah says she’s living a beautiful life with her wife.
“Marriage life with Terez is GREAT. We are already planning our first honeymoon! It’s tradition that you give paper the first year so we are planning a trip (paper equals tickets) to island hop in the South of Fiji!!!!”
And Monifah had some words of wisdom to share with any of her female fans who want to get married as well.
“If the ladies want to marry or renew their vows, I say go for it! That’s a GOOD THING! If that’s something you want to do and have that experience then you should. It’s a great experience to have with your partner and in my opinion, it fortifies your connection,” she said.
“Marriage is based on a foundation of FRIENDSHIP because love is NOT enough, it’s never enough,” she continued. “Your relationship must have trust, respect and loyalty as well. We throw the word ‘love’ around loosely! I encourage people to learn the meaning of THAT word and apply it to your relationship. No one can make you happy; you are responsible for your OWN happiness. Do understand that Love is not “straight” or gay, LOVE is LOVE. We should all have the courage and fortitude to actively love each other as God loves ALL of us.” – nicholas robinson
