Just 10 days before her 3rd birthday, 2-year-old Kamiya Gross was murdered in a triple shooting on July 1, 2014, in Inkster, Michigan, near Detroit. At around 3:30 p.m., mother Erica Gross dropped her daughter off with her father, 34-year-old Kenneth French as she was heading to work unaware that would be the last time she saw her baby girl alive and well.

Hours later, just before 8:30 p.m., a gunman ran up to baby Kamiya and shot her in her right eye before turning to her father Kenneth and shooting him in his stomach. The gunman darted off still firing shots, one of which struck a close family friend, 12-year-old Chelsea Lancaster. Sources report that the gunman shot the young toddler as a way to send a message to her father.

Erica Gross received a call while at work urging her to rush to the hospital where she received the most devastating news about her baby’s death. “Oh, my heart is broken! My heart is gone. I’m a young mother. Those were the best two years of my life and it’s taken away from me,” says Gross.

Currently Kamiya’s father, Kenneth, remains hospitalized in stable condition while Chelsea Lancaster is in critical condition, fighting for her life.

Arrests have been made and a suspect is being held in custody.
