LeBron James is facing another decision. The world’s best basketball player is the NBA’s most coveted free agent and teams around the league are trying to convince James to sign with their franchise.
Currently, the Miami Heat, L.A. Lakers, Dallas Mavs and Cleveland Cavs are on James’ short list of considerations. But while a return to the Cleveland Cavs would create a storybook-like atmosphere for the NBA, it would be James’ worst decision since “The Decision.”
Here are five reasons LeBron James should never return to Cleveland.
Cleveland Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has issues
Before Donald Sterling proved to be a wacky and racist billionaire owner, Dan Gilbert made us all feel uneasy with his brutal letter to James after he decided to sign with the Miami Heat. Even Jesse Jackson spoke out against Gilbert’s letter and compared it to how a slave owner would view his slave. Years after the backslash, the brutal letter remained on the Cavs website and was only taken down days ago when James’ agent named the Cavs as a potential destination.
Obnoxious fans
Once James announced that he would sign with Miami, Cavs fans responded by burning James’ jerseys and booing him ferociously every time he returned to Cleveland. And last month, Cleveland fans gave ugly racist responses after a Cleveland newspaper asked readers to name James’ unborn daughter. Why would he want to return to a bunch of ungrateful fans who seem to be bigger losers than their sports teams?
The Cavs are a long way from winning an NBA title
The Cavs have a great point guard in Kyrie Irving and the number one pick in the NBA draft in Andrew Wiggins. However, the Cavs are a long way from being tittle contenders. Even with James, the Cavs are the third or fourth best team in the Eastern Conference and would get destroyed by any team in the Western Conference, if, by chance, they made it to the NBA Finals. James would be taking two steps backwards by signing with the Cavs.
There are much better options
Why would James leave sunny days in South Beach to experience cold and brutal winters in Cleveland again? If James wants to leave Miami, Los Angeles and Dallas are much better cities to consider.
The city is dreadful when it comes to sports
Some cities are cursed with horrific sports teams. Cleveland stands as the most pathetic professional sports city in America. The Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians can count on their hands the number of winning seasons they’ve had in history. The Cavs haven’t fared much better. For James, the second time around will not be much better.
