Common admits Drake beef began over Serena Williams

During a recent interview on the Combat Jack show, veteran emcee Common came clean about his awkward beef with Drake a few years ago.

While promoting his forthcoming album, Nobody’s Smiling, Common admitted the 2011 beef started over his ex-girlfriend Serena Williams. Things began when shortly after Com and Serena’s breakup, Drake made a play for her and sent out a tweet that read “ I cannot wait to put it on you and make you sweat……….during our match this weekend.” Com says the rumors of Williams and Drake being an item and the way it was publicly being played out got under his skin and he hit the studio to record “Sweet,” which many speculated was about the Toronto rapper:

I think that was, for me, an emotional thing. I was feeling like … at that time, I think it was the “Drake [and] Serena situation” I didn’t know what was going on with that. I didn’t know if he was throwing things, shots or anything. This is my ex and we kind of going our separate ways. Unfortunately, the war might have been over a girl, even if at the time I never said that.
