President Barack Obama has been taking his role as the nation’s most pro-LGBT leader extremely seriously over the past year, and this past weekend he continued to show his support for the community when he made a surprise video appearance at the Gay Games 9 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Obama recorded an uplifting welcome video for the athletes and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building LGBT equality across the nation.
“I know some of you have come from place where it requires courage — even defiance — to come out, sometimes at great personal risk,” Obama states in the video. “You should know that the United States stands with you and for your human rights, just as our athletes stand with you on the fields at these games. After all, the very idea of America is that no matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from or who you love, you can make it if you try.”
At this rate, Obama will certainly go down as one of the greatest presidential LBGT allies in history, and it certainly makes a difference that the leader of the free world has embraced the LBGT community across the board. – nicholas robinson
