Spike Lee was one of several celebrities to attend the funeral of Michael Brown. But what’s most important is that the acclaimed filmmaker was accompanied by his son, Shelton Lee. It was a statement without words.
Considering the untimely death of Michael Brown, black fathers must now do more to protect their sons. A few days ago, Lee said, “There is a war on the black male in America.” Police brutality and murder, prison and fratricide continue to claim black males at an alarming rate.
But the sight of Lee with his son gives us all hope. If we can stand by our sons and teach them how to deal with harsh realities, maybe we can all survive in a nation that seems unjust to the average black male citizen.
