Where are you from originally?
I’m from Boston. But I’ve lived all over. My dad has owned a building in New York my whole life so I’ve been back and forth, pretty much all over the east coast. I have family in Virginia. I’m always traveling, but now I’m in Miami.
Who were your musical idols?
I’ve always been into rap. Lots of Jay Z, Nas, and Eminem growing up. Later on I got into more melodic music. My taste is really all across the board. I’m a really big fan of stuff that doesn’t sound like anything else like Pharrell and M.I.A.
Name four other artists you’d include in your own super group along with yourself?
I’m going with my girl Aaliyah. I would pick my dog Pharrell, but he has his own thing going on. He got all the Bae’s and that’s too many people for my group. I also gotta have M.I.A. I need some rap other than me so I’m gonna throw Drake in my group and maybe Fam-Lay. But Fam may just wanna be the manager, so if not Fam, then Pusha T.
Being a on a reality show that features five women, people may expect to see lots of cattiness like in other shows. Talk about providing a different image?
Oh we definitely wanted to give a different look. We all had this preconceived notion that we’d go on the show and it was gonna be like this huge drama filled thing but we were all like “Let’s not make it that.” We all came to together and realized that we’re here for one common goal: to win. What’s better than doing it together? We just wanted to show a genuine respect and support for women and Oxygen gave us the platform to do that. “Sisterhood of Hip Hop” is just all about women, our struggle and our drive. The stuff you usually don’t see.
Earlier this season we saw you taking time out of your schedule to go check in with your sister. How’s she doing since then?
She’s doing great. She actually just started 9th grade. She’s at that age where I’m not gonna love everything she does but she’s learning. I’m just gonna be there for her and make sure I’m always available for times like that when she needs someone.
What’s the best part of being a part of this show?
For me individually, the best part is just being able to inspire and seeing all the love and positivity. I have people that write to me now and it makes what I do so much more fulfilling. It’s really all a blessing. That’s what I like to take from the show.
What’s the worst part of being a part of this show?
I don’t know if I can say there is a worst part about being on the show. If anything maybe the people who hit you up online talking crazy but I kinda just laugh at that. You gotta have tough skin to do what we do and I think that we all live our lives on TV for a reason and we don’t really care what people think about us.
Name one song that you wish you’d written?
“No Flex Zone.” I just love that song!
Name an album that you love and know word for word?
Man probably like every Jay Z record that he ever put out. Or Clipse’s Lord Willin’. I love Clipse. I’m a big time Clipse fan.
What’s your creative process like?
I write in moods. Like if I’m going through a certain thing I just write a lot about it and it’s like one chapter. I feel like I write in seasons. However I feel in that season I just put my whole life into it.
What would fans be surprised to know about you?
From watching the show people might think I’m always giving advice, but I am really always cracking jokes. I don’t know if people get to see all the fun we really have but I have lots of fun. Right now I just live in fun. If it’s not fun I don’t wanna do it.
What’s next for you that can fans can look forward to?
Well I have #TrillaTuesdays where I put out a freestyle and video every week. I also have a mixtape dropping very soon called Chola Season. I’m really excited to grace everybody with that. Then of course an album shortly after that. Everything is already done so I’m just ready to bless the world and show them what we got cooking up.
