How’s the adjustment to all the newfound fame?
It’s really been an crazy experience but I love it. People feel like they really know you via the TV. Like when we take pictures someone may refer to something that happened on the show, I do feel like people are really getting a feel for me and personality as well as my music so it’s been fun and I’m just enjoying every bit of it.
Do you think people will relate to your music because they got to know you on the show?
Absolutely. I think people can connect with the music better because they have a feel for who I am. My awareness is definitely up more these days so every week I’m trying more music for the people who have been following me and for the new followers as well. This whole experience has just been a blessing. As artists, we want our music heard and this show has given me a chance to reach so many people.
During the season we’ve seen you go back and forth your mom, Kiki, as your manager. Presently are you two in a good space?
Yes, definitely. It’s crazy how things unfold week to week but you have to keep tuning in to see the journey that our relationship takes. But first and foremost, she’s my mother. That’ll never change of course so I’ll always love her. For that reason, we’ll always be in a good space in our lives.
What’s the best part of being a part of this show?
I really just enjoy having the opportunity to be on TV every week. So many people that will never have that opportunity, I don’t take anything for granted in my life. So yeah … more people getting to be exposed to me is priceless. Also just meeting four other girls who are sweethearts. We’re all chasing the same dream so it’s nice being around others who know what you’re going through,
What’s the worst part of being a part of this show?
Just that we’re five different women who display various emotions and we’re all filmed but we just never know what’s gonna be chosen to be aired and we just kinda gotta roll with the punches. At the end of the day, it’s not the most terrible thing in the world, but that’s what I think is the worst as far as the show.
What’s it like to be able to have someone as innovative and game changing as Missy Elliott as a mentor?
That was definitely an unforgettable experience for me. Working with Missy was incredible. Just to have her presence in my life. You know kids are usually sponges to the people they come up around. So to have Missy to sponge off of and learn from, I feel like it was so key for me. I picked up on her work ethic in the studio and how serious she was about her craft. I got a chance to see how she put together her concerts and tours. I really admired that and I wanted to be like that. Being around her at such an impressionable age was a blessing. She really is a class act.
Name one song that you wish you’d written?
Oh God! Just one? So many songs I wish I wrote. Off the top of my head Lauryn Hill’s song, “(Doo Wop) That Thing” comes to mind.
Name an album that you love and know word for word?
Jeezy’s The Recession believe it or not.
If you had to choose one producer to do an entire concept album with who would you choose?
Most definitely Kanye. I feel like he’s mastered concept albums having given us so many. He’s a really really talented artist and producer. Just to have his insight and working with his crazy creative mind would be a blessing.
What’s next for you that can fans can look forward to?
I recently dropped the “I’m that B—-” video and the song can be downloaded on iTunes. I broke down the B word into an acronym because of course it usually has a negative connotation so I just wanted to flip it for the women who do choose to use that word. It can mean “Beautiful Intelligent Tough Chick in Heels.” Please hit up the radio station and request it. You can follow me on Twitter at @BriannaTheYRB. Follow me on Instagram too at @BriannaPerry. I do follow back. I’m very social on my networks. And also check out BriannaPerry.com for any show dates and when I’ll be in your city.
