How’s the adjustment to all the newfound fame?
It’s been a wild ride. I have a huge amount of eyes on me now in the street and industry wise but it’s one of the main reasons why I signed up to do the show.
Is it difficult to do normal things now?
Definitely. The trips to the grocery store are not the same anymore. But I’m happy to see that it’s a lot of fans of the show. A lot of young kids come up to me like “Wow, you’re Nyemiah from Sisterhood of Hip Hop!’ ” and I’m kinda amazed like, “Wow, you young kids are watch the show?”
Does knowing you have so many young impressionable eyes on you give you a greater sense of responsibility as far the images portrayed on the show?
Yes it does but whether it be kids, adults, grandparents, whoever .. .I think for me I kinda want to get my image as a sensible person across. I think people have a bad idea of female hip-hop artists based on what they’ve been exposed to in the past. So I definitely just wanna set who I am apart from other people. Signing up I knew I wanted to be portrayed as the person that I am. I can disagree with people and I don’t have fight them or throw anything at them or talk crap about them to win an argument. Unfortunately there are people who think you have to go to that sort of extreme of violence and the like and I just wanted to be someone who shows that you have other options
Who were your musical idols?
I’m from South Jamaica, Queens so G-Unit was big for me. I loved Dip Set too. At the same time I was moved by some of the groundbreaking ladies of hip-hop like Queen Latifah and Salt N Pepa. I appreciated how empowering they were and the statements they made in their music
What’s the best part of being a part of this show?
You get to see women really speaking to each other and hanging out. As far as hip-hop, you don’t really see that a lot. I think it’s cool people can see us as artists who do the same thing speak to each other and support each other.
What’s the worst part of being a part of this show?
I know when you sign up for entertainment you’re gonna get your share of ridicule and people’s opinions. But those people who thrive on leaving you negative comments and troll you all day are the worst. But it’s part of putting yourself out there and on TV but it still can be frustrating.
Name one song that you wish you’d written?
I really love Nicki Minaj’s “Moment For Life.” I think it’s such an incredible song. And everyone can relate to having something that makes you really happy and wishing you can have that moment of happiness for life.
Name an album that you love and know word for word?
Lil Kim “Hardcore.” She was so bold and uncensored on that album. To this day whenever I hear a song from it I still get really excited.
As far as your creative process when do you find that you write the best?
Usually when I have down time. When I’m not running around doing this and that. I might have different song titles on my phone’s notepad and I’ll go through them and start putting down ideas of what I wanna talk about and build from there. I’m always writing though. Lines come to me all the time. I may be in the car or in bed or I may wake up with a line.
What’s it like to have the legendary Timbaland as a mentor for you?
Having Tim in my corner is huge. Knowing all the stuff he’s done with Missy and other female artists like Lil Kim and Ms. Jade … he definitely knows how to bring out the best in us. So it’s huge for me because I feel like he can give me more direction on what I need to do. Plus I feel like he can give me some insight that he didn’t have with Missy, because they were learning the business together, he can kinda give me that so I won’t have to stumble over those things. It’s really great leadership to have.
Tell me about your latest song and video “Downgrade”?
The song is about downgrading a guy. You know he’s cheating and acting up so I had to downgrade him to number two and start making myself number one. I’m thankful because so far it seems a lot of people love the record. I’m getting a lot of positive feedback from it. It was such a fun video. I mean I got to shoot it on a beach!
What’s next for you that can fans can look forward to?
Well I just recently dropped my newest single called “No Question” featuring K Camp. We got a video for that coming out soon. I also have lots of music on deck. Stuff I was working on before the show. There’s a lot of stuff on my YouTube as well. And of course, there’s plenty on my website NyemiahSupreme.com. I encourage everyone to log on and check out my whole catalogue.
