Roadside coffins in Georgia

This is a conspiracy theory that goes back a few years but has been given new life via Ebola “truthers.” There are people who believe there are hundreds of thousands of “coffins” along a stretch of highway in Madison, Georgia. The close proximity to the CDC has led to the assumption that these “coffins” are preparation for dead bodies resulting from a planned mass outbreak.

The coffins are actually burial vaults, aka “grave liners.” The ones in Georgia are leased by a company called Vantage and were purchased by the Department of Veterans Affairs for war vets and fallen soldiers. Burial vaults are designed to keep the elements out of coffins and to keep burial grounds from caving in. If there was a massive outbreak that resulted in hundreds of thousands of dead people in a relatively short span of time, it’s doubtful that the government would spend money on coffins when it could simply use mass graves or burn the bodies.
