Stanley Mozee, 55, and Dennis Lee Allen, 52, who were convicted of killing a South Dallas pastor more than 15 years ago, were set free Tuesday, Oct. 28. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins recommended that their convictions be overturned.
Jesse Borns Jr. was killed in April 1999 and the Innocence Project has been combing through the files of the case since 2008. A jury had convicted Mozee and Allen in 2000, and they each received a life sentence for the robbery and stabbing death of the pastor.
“I have no animosity toward anyone,” stated Mozee. “As a matter of fact, I give the Dallas County judicial system a positive note, if the court of criminal appeals will act and do the just thing in this matter.”
“It feels wonderful,” said Allen. “I mean, it’s kind of hard to explain, but try to imagine the greatest joy you have ever experienced in your life, and that’s what I’m feeling right now.”
One reporter asked if they had ever given up hope. Mozee stated, “No sir, because I had God and faith and I knew the truth was going to come to light.” Allen professed that the support of his family kept him going.
The hearing to overturn the convictions took place this morning and finally Mozee and Allen will experience freedom once again.
