The elite LAPD Robbery and Homicide Unit have announced their intentions to open an investigation on comedian Bill Cosby. Detectives from the LAPD have stated that they will request a voluntary formal sit down interview with Cosby. The interview will center on allegation that in 1974, Cosby took a then 15-year-old Judith Huth to the Playboy Mansion. While at the Mansion, Huth claims Cosby gave her alcohol and had her engage in a sex act.
Huth is represented by noted attorney Gloria Allred, who filed a civil lawsuit against Cosby last Tuesday. She was also interviewed by LAPD detectives for at least 90 minutes regarding her claims against the comedian. LAPD Police Chief Charlie Beck has stated that his office will investigate any complaints against the comedian regardless of the statue of limitations. Cosby’s lawyers are fighting back however with a countersuit against Huth.
Despite the charges in the Huth case being more than 40 years ago, California does have a unique law regarding childhood victims of rape. If a person remembers their experience from childhood and reports that experience as a repressed memory of rape to the police within three years, legal action can be taken. Cosby’s lawyers have stated Huth claims are false and by her own admission she first tried to get money from Cosby 10 years ago. It was at the time she was shopping her story around to various news outlets regarding the alleged assault. That means her repressed memory would have taken place more than 13 years ago, well outside the three year limit. In addition, when people are accused under the California law, the accused must be identified as a “John Doe.” Huth and Allred have publically identified Bill Cosby as the suspect in this case.
Two dozen plus women have publicly come forward with allegations of being drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby. Cosby has continually denied the allegations but did reach a confidential out of court settlement with one accuser. Cosby has lost several honors in the past three weeks including one from the United States Navy.
