As one of the transgender community’s biggest activists and stars, Janet Mock has enjoyed a tremendous year of success for both herself and her community. However, Mock scored a major win in her own personal life this week when she revealed that she’s now engaged to her longtime boyfriend.
Mock announced her engagement to her boyfriend, Aaron Tredwell, with an Instagram photo of herself and Tredwell as she hugged him and showed off the engagement ring her gave her.
In a 2011 article for XOJane.com, Mock shared the story of her relationship with Tredwell, whom she met on a bar dance floor in 2009, and explained how he accepted her after she revealed she’s transgender.
“Most importantly, he’s the one who doesn’t want me to be a mystery, not to him at least. He wants to know me, to ask me questions about my past, force me to retrace steps that have made me the woman I am today. He’s also the one who pushed me to begin fulfilling my dream of writing stories that matter: my own, my forthcoming memoir,” she wrote.
“We’re real together, and Aaron and the friendship and love affair that we’ve built is my foundation. A platform that has fortified my own sense of self, and has, in the nearly three years since we’ve met on that Lower East Side dance floor, given me the strength to step out of my shadow and come forward as a trans woman, lending my story as one of many narratives on what it means to be a young woman who happened to be born a boy,” she added.
We’re happy that Mock has found true love in Tredwell and we hope they have a happy marriage together.
