There is a good chance that another Black coach will be hired to lead an NFL team in 2015. Todd Bowles (Arizona Cardinals) and Teryl Austin (Detroit Lions) are frontrunners to land a head coaching position.
On Jan. 8, Bowles interviewed with the Chicago Bears. He said the interview “went well.” Bowles is also being interviewed by the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets and the Atlanta Falcons.
Bowles once lived in Atlanta and coached for Morris Brown College. The Georgia Dome is located across the street from the HBCU campus.
Austin interviewed with the 49ers and will also interview with the Chicago Bears.
However, Austin and Bowles could be pawns for teams who must abide by the Rooney Rule. The Rooney Rule forces NFL teams with coaching vacancies to interview at least one minority coach.
Bowles and Austin are both qualified to be NFL coaches and proved their value by leading outstanding defenses on teams that made the playoffs.
