Before the world started making parodies and memes of Oprah Winfrey’s famous declaration, “You get a car …,” theatergoers were reciting the infamous sing-songy catchphrase “Beauty Shop!!!”
This hilarious stage play complete with catfights, an over-the-top gay man and gossip set in a beauty shop is scheduled to run in Atlanta this October, the “Godfather” of urban theater, Shelly Garrett, revealed to rolling out on Friday, April 10, 2015.
“I said I wasn’t doing Beauty Shop again,” Garrett laughs. It took some urging by a few people including Norman Smith of Casper Entertainment, the promoter behind the very successful Flashback Festival.
“It will be held at a beautiful venue that seats 850 and we will do five shows,” shares the proud member of Cumberland Community Church located in Cobb County, Georgia.
Beauty Shop, which had its first run April of 1986 at the San Bernardino Valley College, holds box-office records in more than 55 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Oakland, San Diego, Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago, Newark and forty more American cities.
It is credited with launching the careers of actors Kym Whitley, Tommy Ford, the late Michael Clarke Duncan and so many others.
Who can we expect to see on stage?
“Jackie Christie from ‘Basketball Wives of L.A.’ and Derrick Monk, a great singer, have already committed. She played a chauffeur in the TV version, but for this stage, she has a larger role. Dorien Wilson from the TV show, ‘The Parkers,’ will also be in it. My wife [Doris] just started casting but she’ll have it done by next Friday.”
