Interactive map shows killings by police since January 2000

The recent incidents of police killings across the country have caught national attention. However there is no accurate indicator of deaths due to police use of deadly force. Currently data comes from public, media and FBI sources, but use of force reports by law enforcement to the FBI is voluntary and only covers an estimated 35 percent of all killings by police officers.

One non- profit organization that seeks to bring the data of killings by police to the general public is called Fatal Encounters.  The organization recently released an interactive map showing reported police killings since January 1, 2000. The map is startling when you realize the number of people killed by gunshot and the under reported total of 5,600 people.
