The princess of pop, Rihanna, is on the cover of Vogue’s coveted 2015 Met Gala issue. On the cover, documenting this year’s theme, China: Through The Looking Glass, RiRi is wearing her magnificent and rather large Guo Pei-designed ensemble, which according to Rihanna, took one seamstress two full years to complete by hand.
“WOW!!! I am very honored to have this image selected for the new cover of @voguemagazine !! #metgala2015 #art #fashion #Vogue” the bad gal tweeted in response to the announcement.
Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour sealed her approval, telling talk show host Seth Meyers, ‘I really want to tell you about this dress. Because Rihanna is such a star. She surfed the Internet looking for this, and this was designed by a famous, famous Chinese designer Guo Pei. It apparently took one Chinese person two years to make this dress.”
In fact, Guo Pei revealed to The Cut that it took 50,000 hours to create Rihanna’s “Magnificent Gold” dress.
“The focus and the attention paid to this dress will make it remembered by the world — [what] I want is to make them remember…. It is my responsibility to let the world know China’s tradition and past, and to give the splendor of China a new expression. I hope that people do know China in this way,” she said.
This is the second time the 27-year-old fashion icon has nabbed such an honor. In 2014, Rih graced the cover of Vogue’s Special Edition Met Gala issue alongside Beyoncé.
And while for us, Rihanna nabbing the cover is a no-brainer, seeing that her ensemble was the most talked about garment of the evening, made headlines around the world, and sparked countless social media memes; what do you think about her latest honor? Sound off in the comment section below.
