Taye Diggs is no stranger to playing gay on TV, but could he be playing a transgender woman soon onstage? Well, according to reports, Diggs may be in line for the lead role in the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Hedwig, which was written John Cameron Mitchell, with music by Stephen Trask, tells the fictional story of a rock band fronted by transgender rocker Hedwig as she sings about everything in her troubled life from her botched sex change surgery to her attempts to become a rock star.
According to Adweek writer Jason Lynch, Diggs is likely to succeed “Glee’s” Darren Criss in playing the lead character of Hedwig in the play.
Diggs also hinted that he’s gotten the role when he posted an Instagram and Twitter photo of himself with a script for the play.
If Diggs does get the part, then this will be a groundbreaking moment in Broadway history as he’ll be the first Black man to play the lead role in the play. We hope that Diggs gets the part and that he does justice to the amazing character of Hedwig.
