In what may be one the biggest upsets in recent memory, the Melissa McCarthy comedy, Spy, easily toppled the heavily anticipated big-screen adaptation of the hit HBO series Entourage at this weekend’s box office despite the latter opening two days earlier.
Spy opened with an impressive $30 million to overtake The Rock’s earthquake drama, San Andreas, and drop it to second place with a tally of a little over $26 million. Coming in third this week is the third installment in the Insidious franchise. The twisted horror had a better than expected opening week and was able to bring in $23 million. Of note with Entourage, it opened in more theaters than Insidious 3, but about 600 theaters less than Spy, but still only managed to earn a flat $10.4 million. Coming in fifth place this week is Mad Max: Fury Road, which beat out Pitch Perfect 2 by about $200 thousand as it totaled $7.9 million.
Needless to say, all eyes will be on the box office next week to see if Entourage can recover as it’s expected to play in more theaters.
