Brandy has spoken honestly about feeling like she’s gotten a fresh new start to her life thanks to her new role in the Broadway musical Chicago; however, in a new candid interview, Brandy explains that her new lease on life came after a rocky past year of battling major depression.

In a new interview with NewYork.com, Brandy explained that she’d reached one of the darkest points of depression in her life last year and suffered in private from the public eye.

“People would never guess the dark space that I was in about a year ago and how long I was sad and depressed. It showed in my physical frame and in my eyes. Long story short: I cried out for help and the decision followed to be ‘the best version of myself’; I then did the ‘work’ spiritually, mentally and physically and saw my old life disappear. Chicago presented itself to me and I then stepped into my dream. I’m wide-awake now. Thank you, God,” Brandy explained.

Brandy goes on to explain that a large part of her depression were the setbacks in her life and career, which no doubt included a declining music career and the abrupt end of her engagement.
