Jurassic World managed to hold on to the top spot at this weekend’s box office despite a record-breaking opening for Pixar’s animated comedy, Inside Out.
With $102 million earned in its second week, Jurassic World is expected to clear $1 billion faster than any other movie in history. The sci-fi dinosaur flick narrowly missed Avatar’s record for best second week ever by $1 million. Unfortunately for Inside Out, it may have opened a week too early. Its $91 million opening was good enough to earn it the title of best original movie opening ever, but not good enough to land atop the box office. Coming in a distance third this week is Melissa McCarthy’s Spy, which earned an additional $10.5 million. San Andreas managed to stick around the upper half of this week’s top 10 with another $8.2 million. And rounding out the top five is the Sundance favorite, Dope. The ’90s hip-hop flavored movie shocked many insiders with its $6 million open considering it barely played on 2,000 screens across the country.
