Taye Diggs turned head across the Internet last month when it was announced that he had been tapped to be the first black man to play the lead character of genderqueer rocker Hedwig in the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Now, fans are finally getting a first look at Diggs as Hedwig.
In the photo, which Diggs shared via his Instagram page, the actor completely delivers as the glittery and glistening androgynous glam rocker.
Diggs also explained to People magazine why he’s enjoying the titular role.
“Hedwig is the role of a lifetime. I’m looking forward to being challenged performance-wise on many levels, as well as being humbled by the musical’s social implications,” Diggs said, adding, “I also like wearing nail polish.”
We can’t wait to see the rest of his Broadway looks.
As previously reported, Hedwig, which was written John Cameron Mitchell, with music by Stephen Trask, tells the fictional story of a rock band fronted by genderqueer rocker Hedwig as she sings about everything in her troubled life from her botched sex change surgery to her attempts to become a rock star.
Diggs will begin his stint as Hedwig for a limited 12-week engagement starting July 22 at the Belasco Theatre in New York.
