A 9-year-old boy may not regain consciousness because of a piece of birthday cake. According to ABC 7 in Maryland, Robert Leroy Wilson, 31, was watching the child and his brother when the incident occurred. Wilson is the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

While watching the 9-year-old boy, Wilson discovered the boy took a piece of birthday cake. Wilson became upset and wanted to teach the child a lesson on not stealing; however, he took things too far.

Wilson handcuffed the boy and shoved him to the ground while asking him questions. The boy was also hit by Wilson several times. Wilson’s brother called 911 once he saw that the boy was severely injured. But when paramedics arrived, Wilson and the boy’s mother turned them away and said the boy was only suffering from congestion. Four hours later, the boy’s condition worsened.

When authorities arrived, they found the boy unresponsive and not breathing. The boy was rushed to the hospital where he was admitted to critical condition with head trauma. He also suffered multiple wounds and bruises to his face, ears, spinal column, neck, and buttocks. Medical officials said some of the injuries occurred during abuse that occurred in the past.

Wilson was arrested and charged with first degree assault and child abuse. He is being held on $1 million bond. There have yet to be charges filed against the child’s mother for apparent neglect. The boy is currently in critical condition, but doctors say he may never regain consciousness.
