The Confederate flag will no longer fly at the Statehouse in South Carolina; however, some Republican members attempted to add amendments that would keep the legacy of the Confederate flag alive.
There was an attempt to overturn limits on the flag that would allow the National Park Service to sell the Confederate flag and other paraphernalia.
It was a move that displayed how racial attitudes continue to exist. Any person who would agree to keep that symbol of hate alive should not be allowed to serve in the House or Senate. But one Republican, Rep. Jenny Horne, gave a passionate speech and called the flag a symbol of hate.
South Carolina’s Confederate flag issue recently re-emerged after racist terrorist Dylann Roof killed nine Black people inside of Emmanuel AME Church in in Charleston, SC in June. Roof, and other white supremacists, adopted the Confederate flag as a racist symbol.
Since the terrorist attack, the flag has created a stir as some Southerners have claimed that the Confederate flag has historical value. But the racial aspects of the flag couldn’t be ignored.
The flag could come down Friday.
