Amandla Stenberg found herself at the center of public attention this week when she boldly criticized Kylie Jenner for appropriating Black culture by rocking cornrows on her Instagram page. And although Jenner dismissed Stenberg (and dissed Jaden Smith in the process), Stenberg’s comments have sparked a national conversation about race and culture. Now, Stenberg has continued the conversation by posting her thoughts on cultural appropriation and why the world needs to confront erasure when it comes to Black lives.
Yesterday, Stenberg hopped on Instagram and posted a lengthy message on her thoughts on blackness and beauty, and she asked if Black female lives matter in society.
We applaud Stenberg for sparking a much-needed dialogue on race in America and for seeking to empower and encourage Black women.
Unfortunately, not everyone sees Stenberg’s stance as positive. For instance, Bravo host Andy Cohen recently blasted her for critiquing Jenner.
