The list of historic accomplishments for Universal Pictures’ Straight Outta Compton keeps growing and growing.
With a third straight week atop the weekend box office and a total gross of $134.1 million dollars, thus far, Compton has surpassed the critically acclaimed Johnny Cash biopic, Walk The Line, as the highest grossing music based biopic in history. Line totaled $119.5 million during its domestic run in 2005.
Given the impressive resume that Compton is putting together, fans and industry insiders alike can’t help but wonder if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science will snub the film or give it what many believe to be it’s just due and award it with Oscar nods at next year’s 88th annual Academy Awards ceremony.
Of note in comparison of the two films, aside from overtaking Line in total gross, Compton also had a much bigger opening weekend with its record breaking $60 million draw compared to Line’s opening total of $22.3 million, though both films had a similar budget of approximately $28 million.
