The 19th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival was swarming with the hottest entertainers in the industry from Sept. 23-27. The event, presented by BET and founding sponsor HBO, featured over 80 independent documentaries, narratives, and shorts that were all shown at the AMC Empire 25 theater in NYC.
Some of the most riveting films of the 5-day festival included Nelson George’s documentary on the life of Misty Copeland, A Ballerina’s Tale; Marc Silver’s piece on slain Black teen Jordan Davis, 3 1/2 Minutes Ten Bullets; and Somewhere in the Middle, a drama about four lovers and intertwining affairs.
“With BET and HBO as our returning partners for the festival, we continue to highlight important stories that the world needs to see,” said Gabrielle Glore, the festival’s director. “This year’s festival slate features a diverse collection of films representing culture from across the globe, allowing us to deliver Urbanworld’s most internationally curated content to date. We are proud that Urbanworld continues to be the destination for both filmmakers, studios and networks to connect with multicultural audiences.”
The Urbanworld red carpet was flooded with stars. Raven-Symoné, Tyrese Gibson, T.I., Loretta Devine, Sway Calloway, Lamman Rucker, Garcelle Beauvais, Robert Ri’chard, Diggy Simmons, David Banner, Jaleel White, and more were spotted.
