Sony’s animated comedy Hotel Transylvania 2 made easy work of the competition at the weekend box office on its way to a record setting opening to become the biggest September movie opening of all time.
Featuring the voices of stars such as Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez, Trans 2 exceeded industry predictions by doing $47.5 million to break the previous record for a September opening that was held by the first Hotel Trans movie when it opened with $43 million during the same weekend in 2012. With its record opening, Trans 2 marks the biggest debut for Sony Pictures Animation and also the third time in four weeks that a Sony film has opened at no. 1 following the successful showings of The Perfect Guy and War Room.
Trans 2’s $47.5 million proved to be enough to more than double the take of the Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway comedy, The Intern, which opened at a modest $18.2 million. Last week’s No, 1 film, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, fell to third place this week with an additional $14 million earned. Action thriller Everest had the rare move upward from last week jumping ahead to the fourth spot and taking in an extra $13 million thanks to an increased theater count. And rounding out the top five is Johnny Depp’s mobster flick, Black Mass, which managed to pull in another $11.5 million.
