Michael Sam and Vito Cammisano broke plenty of ground during their once high-profile relationship, especially when they cemented themselves into history as the first openly gay male couple to kiss on national TV during the NFL draft on that historic day when Sam was drafted to the St. Louis Rams. But as Sam’s NFL dreams fell apart, so did his relationship and the couple, who became engaged earlier this year, split up this past summer. However, it appears the former couple is on good terms and still interesting in teaming up for the LGBT community because they recently shot san anti-bullying video together.
In the clip, Sam and Cammisano can be seen wearing purple shirts in honor of Spirit Day, which was held yesterday and sees millions across the nation wearing purple, the color representing “Spirit” in the rainbow flag. On camera, Sam and Cammisano open up about their own experiences with bullying and tell their younger fans that they are not alone in their struggle for acceptance.
“As someone who was once bullied, I think it’s very important that we tackle this issue,” Sam says in the clip. “So many kids have reached out to me, talking about how they’ve been bullied.”
Cammisano added, “I never want any young person to feel like they can’t be comfortable being who they are.”
Considering how devastating the breakup seemed for this couple, no one expected them to be working together again so soon. But it’s good to see that they’re on good terms and can come together for such a great cause. Who knows? Maybe these two will get back together again someday, as well.
