Sanaa Lathan, along with acclaimed husband and wife duo Gina Prince and Reggie Rock Bythewood (“A Different World,” Notorious), will look to take on the topic of police shootings for an “event” series being developed by Fox.
The series will be set in the aftermath of an African-American cop killing a white teen in Tennessee. Lathan will star as the lead investigator sent by the Department of Justice to get to the bottom of the case. Working alongside an appointed special prosecutor, the pair have to navigate the media, public outcry, and mounting social unrest surrounding the case before an all out race war erupts.
The as-of-yet-untitled project will serve as a reunion of sorts for Lathan and Prince-Bythewood (Beyond The Lights, The Secret Life of Bees), who also wrote and directed what turned out to be Lathan’s breakout film, Love and Basketball.
Sources say Fox was thorougly impressed with the first script and are looking to get started on production as soon as possible.
The Bythewoods’ will serve as writers and executive producers of the series along with Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo. Prince-Bythewood will also direct the drama.
No perspective air date has been given for the series, thus far.
