Erykah Badu and Jill Scott ushered in a new generation of soul in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Their mix of soulful ballads were infused with elements of hip-hop, the blues and jazz. During an era where pop artists were often carbon copies of music trends which sold the most, Badu and Scott stayed true to themselves by telling their own stories and controlling the narrative.
It was appropriate that the two were somewhat viewed as the headlining acts during the 2015 Soul Train Awards, which took place on Nov. 29 at The Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas.
Badu served as the host of the event and showed her flare for comedy and also performed several songs. Scott also hit the stage for a medley of her hits and received the first-ever Lady of Soul Award.
The 2015 Soul Train Awards will air on Nov. 29 at 8 p.m.
