Tyshawn Lee’s mother is catching flack for making a questionable decision. According to reports by WLS, the mother of the 9-year-old deceased boy, Karla Lee, used the money from a donation for herself.

Days after Tyshawn was allegedly executed by gang members in Chicago, a GoFundMe account was set up to help pay for the child’s funeral expenses. Over $17,000 was raised in a few days. Karla purchased a 2015 Chrysler 200 and the dealership posted a picture of her and the new car on their Facebook. She was eventually blasted on social media.

Some believed that Karla used the GoFundMe money to purchase the car instead of using it for Tyshawn’s funeral. Karla responded by posting a video on her social media pages.

In the short video, Karla, 26, admits to purchasing the car, but says she did so with her own money and for her protection. “For y’all to be bashing me like that, and I lost my child,” she said. Karla previously had to take public transportation or walk home.

Black neighborhoods in Chicago have been ravished by violence for years. Tyshawn’s murder has caused the nation to pay close attention to a problem that has become an epidemic.

A reward for information on Tyshawn’s murder is currently over $54,000.
