FOX 5 News
Emmy Award-winning journalist Cynné Simpson covers a broad spectrum of stories across the country and internationally. You may recognize her gorgeous face from anchoring FOX 5 News at 5 and 10 p.m. on weeknights. Since joining the network, Simpson has had the honor and privilege of reporting at significant events from the 2008 and 2012 U.S. presidential races to the 2011 British royal wedding.
Simpson started her career as a fellow at “ABC News Nightline,” where she impressed Ted Koppel with her ability to report in English and Spanish. She landed her first interview with Oprah Winfrey after the mogul announced her nationally syndicated talk show was ending. She is also known for her exclusive interviews with first lady Michelle Obama at the White House, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Maya Angelou and more.
“I’ve known that I wanted to become a journalist since I was small. I started recording interviews on a Fisher Price tape deck as a toddler. In high school, I presented the morning announcements over the intercom. Then in college, a series of internships lead to my first on-air opportunity,” she says.
Simpson graduated magna cum laude from Howard University in Washington, D.C., after finishing her studies in Spain at the University of Salamanca. She considers confidence, focus and hard work to be among the most important factors that drive her success.
“Women who are interested in journalism should explore how they can maximize social media platforms. Newspapers, magazines and even traditional TV stations are all fighting to maintain relevance in the Internet age,” Simpson says.
Being a woman with such a powerful platform has given her the opportunity to influence millions. Simpson believes the highest compliment is learning that her life’s work is inspiring to others.
