Atlanta-based, Virgin islands-bred R. City affectionately known as Rock City were featured on Tuesday night’s episode of NBC’s “The Voice.” Brothers Timothy and Theron Thomas performed their platinum single, “Locked Away” featuring Adam Levine in front of a packed house and Levine’s fellow judges, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell and Blake Shelton, on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015.
The prime-time performance was a defining moment for the brothers, who have written numerous hits for other music industry heavyweights for years while their project took a backseat. With a platinum single featuring one of the country’s biggest and most marketable acts, naysayers of R. City’s project have come full circle. The single “Locked Away” was added to Shazam’s hall of fame after being “shazamed” over five million times since its release in the summer of 2015.
“We are a real-life rags-to-riches story,” says Timothy Thomas, “we went from sleeping in studios when we first moved to Atlanta, to now having a number one record and performing on The Voice. Anything is possible if you don’t give up.”
Theron’s vocals can be heard on several records the duo have written for other artists such as Usher’s ‘I Don’t Mind’ and Ciara’s ‘I Bet.” In addition to his adlibs, Theron started marking R. City records with his signature tagline, “rightaboutnow.” “Now that people know it’s us, they realize they knew us as writers before they knew us as artists,” Theron explains.
After penning hits for mega acts like Miley Cyrus, Chris Brown and Fergie, R. City says its like a homecoming to be able to share their own project. “Everything we’ve done has been leading up to this moment,” Theron says.
Last week R. City released the second single titled, “Makeup” from their much-anticipated debut album, What Dreams Are Made Of. The second single was immediately added to rotation in major markets.
