Rolling out got a chance to catch up with Emmy-nominated television host and America’s favorite TV fashion journalist, Lloyd Boston, at the third annual Family Dollar Fabulous event, a signature beauty and fashion event that connects top Black beauty brands with online influencers. Boston is the style journalist who gets all the hottest red-carpet reveals from New York Fashion Week to the biggest nights in Hollywood. Family Dollar brought Lloyd on board as the event’s spokesperson to share his insights and answer questions on how to look fabulous on a dime.
Rolling out‘s Ariane Davis sat down with Boston to get the inside scoop on what being fabulous means to him. Check it out below.
Wonderful to see you. You look great!
You know I feel good today. It feels good to be able to connect with women of color and help them feel their best from the inside out. And I think that’s what’s been so cool about Family Dollar Fabulous is that they allow me to kind of work my magic on a budget, which is real for a lot of women.
Absolutely. Can you give us some pointers, fashion tips and tell us what is it that you do with your brand, and how is it for us? With your personal brand of Just Be?
Well, I work with the Just Be line, which is a new clothing line for Family Dollar. They’ve kind of brought me in as an ambassador to take the pieces and make them look as chic as I can possibly make them – which is a fun challenge.
And I’m sure they got the right person for that. Look at you!
You know what? Thank you. I love the job. But with Just Be, what’s so cool is that each item is under $15.
Really?
So, we’re talking about clutch bags for $6. A cool take on an Ugg boots for under $15. Chunky scarves. Gorgeous leggings, with built in quilting. I mean, real essentials for real women, with real bodies and with real budgets.
This is very educational for me, because I know a lot of people probably don’t even know, I didn’t know, so I’m being taught something new. And I probably need to go into Family Dollar.
You don’t need me with all them legs …
Hey, I’m just saying …
But the truth of it is, you know when we’re talking about budget and bodies -these women that come into Family Dollar they need a moment to escape: from the kids, from the partner, from the stress of the bills. So, if she can get an outfit, which I’m showing today full outfits for under $40, that makes me feel good as a style expert.
That’s awesome. I want to come see what you put together. I would love to come over there and see.
You better. You need to.
Now, what does fabulous mean to you?
You know, fabulous for me is an overused word.
It is.
You know, I was born in the fashion industry. I worked for many years in New York. I’ve covered the carpets, the red carpets in Hollywood and the cat walks in New York. And you’re always throwing around the word fabulous. But for me, the most fabulous women are the women who keep it simple. Like today, you knew when to stop.
Thank you.
You got a bold shoe on. You have a sexy short on. But you didn’t show too much up here (referencing upper chest area).
You know, when you show a lot down here, you keep it modest up here. You balance it out. You’re giving me classic kind of loose finger waves. You know very kind of Cotton Club, 1920s.
You’re calling me fabulous?
But that’s fabulous to me. Because you had a theme, you stuck with it and you balanced out. Keeping it sexy, keeping it classic. That’s fabulous.
Always. Thank you so very much. So, you just heard the man himself. Arianne is fabulous. This is his definition of fabulous. So, get into it!
Yes. Get into it.
