It was a pretty stagnant weekend at theaters across the country as not a single movie was able to top the $12 million mark.
The only new movie to debut in this week’s top 10 was the Chris Hemsworth-led drama, In the Heart of the Sea, which amassed a disappointing $11 million to capture the No. 2 spot behind the mont long reigning champion, Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2.
The coming weeks will surely see a new box-office champion with the pending releases of a number of films expected to do well, including the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy, Sisters, the Will Smith football drama, Concussion, and the latest installment in the storied Star Wars franchise, The Force Awakens.
Hunger Games’ $11.3 million take this weekend leaves it about $6 million short of the quarter billion mark and helps it narrowly outdo In the Heart of the Sea’s $11 million. The Good Dinosaur held onto its No. 3 spot with an additional $10.4 million while Michael B. Jordan’s turn as Adonis Johnson in the Rocky sequel, Creed, was good enough to place fourth with another $10.1 million. And rounding out the top five is last week’s No. 2 two film, the comedy horror, Krampus, which earned an extra $8 million.
