VH1 is gearing up to premiere a movie about three friends attempting to flourish in the music industry during the early years of hip hop. On Dec. 14, those involved in the network’s original film, The Breaks, celebrated at Red Rooster restaurant in New York City for the movie’s premiere party.
The Breaks is based on journalist Dan Charnas’ book, The Big Payback, which chronicled the history of hip hop culture. The film centers on Nikki, David, and DeeVee — three hip hop heads who are in a scramble to make it big in the industry in NYC during the Summer of 1990.
Nikki (Afton Williamson) is a college grad who earned a scholarship to law school, but her love of hip hop and dreams of being an record exec lead her to take an internship at Fouray Entertainment. Her boyfriend, David (David Call), is the son of a legendary music producer, but he’s determined to make a name for himself separate of his famous father. DeeVee (Tristan “Mack” Wilds) is an aspiring producer who’s searching for the next big rap star who has the potential to make him and his friends’ dreams of success in the industry a reality.
The film may be nostalgic for fans of “The Wire,” as not only does Wilds star in the project, but Woody Harris also plays a role. Harris, who played Avon Barksdale on the popular television series, said that being on the set of The Breaks was very reminiscent of filming for the gritty HBO show.
“You can do movies and sometimes, you can’t pick up a vibe,” Harris told VH1. “This set is young and bubbling. There’s so much of ‘The Wire’ there.”
The Breaks will air on Jan. 4, and reportedly, there is a strong possibility that the movie will become a series.
